Nexus CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence

Drawing on over 30 years’ experience of working with survivors, Nexus has designed a course to enhance the theoretical understanding and skills of counsellors working with survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) and sexual violence.

PrintThis course is targeted at professional counsellors qualified to Level 4 Diploma or above. It is a tailor-made qualification and has been accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). It is the only course of its kind currently available in the UK accredited as
a Level 5 Diploma.

The course consists of 8 – 2 day modules that will take place on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 6:15 pm.

In addition to scheduled classroom sessions, candidate time of two days will be required to take part in Clinical Induction and Safeguarding Children & Vulnerable Adults Training prior to candidates beginning approved clinical placements.

COURSE FEE: £1250

Non-refundable registration fee of £250 followed by 10 monthly payments of £100.

Full payment at the start of the course is discounted to £1200 including the registration fee of £250.

AIMS

The course aims to provide counsellors with understanding of the long-term impact that CSA, or sexual violence can have, and to equip them with a variety of tools and techniques to utilize when working with clients affected by these issues.

Candidates will learn about the impact that trauma can have on clients, emotionally, mentally and physically. They will also examine the emotional impact of this work on the counsellor through a thorough exploration of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, and the self-care strategies necessary to minimize and counteract these risks.

The objective of the course is to empower counsellors to work safely with those impacted by CSA and sexual violence by introducing them to a range of theoretical models that will assist them to support clients presenting with the wide range of issues arising from this type of trauma.

Essential Criteria

At the time of application candidates must:

  • Have successfully completed a CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) or its equivalent (approximately 450 guided learning hours), in addition to appropriate pre-TC-L4 (or equivalent) training
  • Be a member of BACP or IACP and be accredited, or actively working towards accreditation
  • Have a minimum of 100 hours of supervised clinical practice
  • Have a minimum of 10 hours of personal therapy
  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Be able to demonstrate by way of written submission with the course application experience or interest in working with survivors of CSA or sexual violence in a therapeutic or support role
  • Be able to use online learning resources and communication systems

This qualification requires candidates to undertake a clinical placement with Nexus therefore all applicants will need to take part in a selection interview prior to the start of the course.

Clinical placements will be agreed between Nexus and each candidate individually.

Due to the nature of this work and the vulnerability of Nexus clients not all counsellors will be suited. If candidates are not considered suitable for a clinical placement we hope this will be decided prior to the start of the course however if it arises after the start of the course withdrawal from the training will be managed sensitively.

Additional Requirements

  • Commit to attend a minimum of 80% of all training modules
  • Allocate time for reading and independent study and purchase any required reading materials not available online
  • Complete 60 hours of supervised practice during the course; clinical placements will be carried out at Nexus and will be agreed individually with each candidate after a review of their suitability
  • All candidates will be subject to an enhanced ACCESS NI check prior to any clinical placements being confirmed
  • Complete a minimum of 15 hours of clinical supervision during the course; one to one supervision with a Nexus assigned supervisor will be charged at the discounted rate of £27 for 1.5 hours
  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours of personal therapy during the course; sessions with an accredited therapist will be at the candidate’s expense

An additional two days will be required to take part in a clinical induction and Child Protection Training prior to the start of approved clinical placements. No clinical placements can start until these two days are completed therefore missing them will impact on when approved clinical placements can begin.
